How to choose and winterize an automatic chicken coop door

In winter, a door can have a healthy motor and still fail because wet bedding freezes at the sill, a rail moves out of square, or cold batteries cannot deliver the same current. Build a margin around the whole opening.

Cold batteries

Available power falls as cells get cold. Start winter with the manufacturer-recommended battery chemistry and keep a dated spare set indoors.

Frozen threshold

Meltwater, droppings, and damp bedding can freeze exactly where the door needs to seat. Keep the sill raised, smooth, and easy to clear.

Rail friction

Wood movement and fastener shifts can turn a summer-clear rail into a winter bind. Check full travel by hand with power disconnected when the manual allows.

Clock and light changes

Short days, snow glare, and covered sensors change timing. Reconfirm close behavior after the first major seasonal change.

A safer winter setup

  1. 1Raise the threshold above the litter line and slope exterior surfaces so meltwater drains away.
