Troubleshooting

Automatic chicken door not opening or closing? Start here

First make sure the flock is safe and the opening can be secured. Then separate the fault into power, physical movement, schedule, or remote control. Changing every setting at once makes it harder to find what failed.

Quick answer

  • Record the exact symptom and error before resetting anything.
  • A working app is not proof that the panel closed.
  • Use the reset and release procedure for the model in front of you.

Make tonight secure first

If the door is stuck open near dusk, count the birds and use the approved manual closure or your prepared secure temporary panel. If it is stuck shut in the morning, follow the documented release while keeping fingers and birds out of the mechanism. Do not pry against a motor or reach into moving parts.

Photograph the display, note the time, and write down what happened just before the failure. Useful details include new batteries, a storm, fresh bedding, a moved controller, or a recent reset. Save the current settings if you can. A factory reset may erase the very clues you need.

Match the symptom to the next check

These checks narrow the cause; they do not identify a fault by themselves.
What you seeCheck next
No display or movementApproved power source, battery orientation, accessible connectors, and any documented status indicator
Motor runs; panel stallsDebris, ice, rubbing, displaced rails, or an obstructed travel path
Local button works; schedule failsOperating mode, clock, saved times, sensor placement, and override behavior
Panel reverses or retriesThe model's obstruction response and anything occupying the opening
App and door disagreeThe physical panel first, then controller status, connectivity, and update timing

A symptom can have more than one cause. Low available power and a binding panel can both show up as incomplete travel. Avoid ordering a motor solely because the door stops halfway.

Test one change at a time

Start with the checks your manual permits without disassembly. Remove visible loose bedding from the travel path while the mechanism is safely isolated as directed. Inspect mounting screws and rail alignment. Restore the approved power arrangement and run a supervised local cycle if the instructions allow it.

If you replace batteries, use the specified chemistry and a complete matched set where the manual calls for one. If the unit uses a rechargeable pack, use its designated charging method. A power indicator lighting up does not by itself establish that the supply is suitable for a motor cycle.

Record the result before changing the next thing. For example: the panel stopped at the same point after approved fresh batteries, but completed its travel after a protruding fastener was corrected. That observation gives support a much better starting point than a report that the door is unreliable.

Calibration is model-specific

ChickenGuard lists low power, front-panel alignment, string alignment, and panel loading among calibration checks. Follow its model section rather than repeatedly forcing the travel limits. A controller can only establish useful endpoints when the physical installation meets its requirements.

Hentronix has a separate troubleshooting guide for its own alarms and mechanisms. A beep, light color, or reset sequence from that system does not diagnose an unrelated door. Use the brand and model number when searching support, and keep the original manual with the coop records.

If a door keeps detecting an obstruction, do not bypass the protection to make it close. Clear the cause or ask the manufacturer to diagnose the repeated response. Do not test obstruction handling with a chicken, your hand, or an improvised object unless that object matches the documented test procedure.

Know when to stop

Stop operating a unit with a damaged power lead, broken mounting, overheating, or a swollen or leaking battery. Keep the flock secure while you contact the maker or the appropriate qualified repairer. Repeated uncontrolled movement also needs investigation before the door returns to automatic service.

Send support the model and serial number, power-source details, exact message or light pattern, a photo of the full mounting, and a short video taken from outside the travel area. Include whether local control works, what changed recently, and the checks already tried. After a fix, observe the next real morning and evening cycles; a successful reset is only the beginning of verification.
